Now that physics is proving the intelligence of the universe what are we to do about the stupidity of mankind? I include myself. I know that the earth is not flat but my feet are. I know that space is curved but my brain has been condoned by habit to grow in a straight line. What I call light is my own blend of darkness. What I call a view is my hand-peinted trompe - l’oeil. I run after knowledge like a ferret down a ferret hole. My limitations, I call the boundaries of what can be known. I interpret the world by confusing other people’s psychology with my own.
Jeanette Winterson, “Gut Symmetries” (1997)
Desire is a place of not yet having: it’s in the becoming, the longing, the imagining…
Amy Scholder, Editor’s Note, “Essential Acker”
Desire is the only honest part of us….but she knew art could awaken in us the authentic desire buried under the meaninglessness of modern life. The responsibility to act on that desire is up to us.
Jeanette Winterson, Introduction, “Essential Acker”
“Taylor may be 15, Willa is 17 but they both look 18 going on who gives a fuck.”
- Swason de Broglio
“We grew still and stared at each other. It seemed incredibly dangerous to look into each other’s eyes, but we were doing it. For how long can you behold another person? Before you have to think of yourself again, like dipping the brush back in for more ink. For a very long time; you didn’t need to get more ink, there was no reason to get anything else, because she was as good as me, she lived on earth like me, she suffered as I did. It was she who looked away and pulled the sheet to her chin.”
